Modular gas sensing platform Scout2

Scout2 has now been replaced by Scout3. Scout3 maintains the key aspects of Scout2, such as modular multiple sensor / e-nose approach, while having capabilities for improved sensitivity and specificity. Please find the full information here: https://volatile.ai/scout3

Scout2

Over 2019-2022 we created an ideal tool for chemical sensing research - a state-of-art take on a traditional electronic nose. The solution is fully modular and samples liquid and solid samples using an array of gas sensors.

The standard configuration we offer integrates metal oxide and photoionization detectors and prioritises accessibility and modularity. Sensors can be opened, swapped out and easily replaced as the system is built to work with adaptable mechanical holders and a range of electrical voltages.

The design allows to objectively compare different sensor performance by acquiring parallel measurements from a single sample. Our approach prevents situations where conclusive results are hindered by the difficulty to collect comparable samples, restricted access to the collected data and interferences from electrical noise.

Use cases

  • Experimental research in food, human samples, industrial samples

  • Very high precision air quality control

  • Ingredient monitoring of solids or liquids, where the factor to control is a single chemical compound

  • Objective sensor calibration and comparison

  • High precision chemical analysis when combined with a GC column

Fully modular approach

Scout2 is built to be as modular as possible. It comes with a total of 15 gas sensor slots, which can accommodate a range of metal oxide, environment and PID sensors. The electronics are built to be compatible with all major sensor manufacturers. The standard configuration includes 12 metal oxide sensor variants, 5 sampling conditions sensors and 1 high sensivity PID sensor. It is easy to open the shell and replace the sensors with alternatives.

Touchscreen control

Scout2 comes with a touchscreen to enable screening and data collection within a few clicks. The controls are carried out using pre-installed software interface. The data can be downloaded via wifi as csv files.

Increased precision

The system includes a range of features to reduce the typical issues in other gas detector arrays: a humidity filter for sample intake, airflow sensor with airflow controls and minimised volume valve.

2 analysis channels

Scout2 is able to monitor chemical signal from two channels: from the environment air or a closed sample cup. This enables quick comparison to the baseline avoiding the influence of changing environmental conditions.
